About Alexandria
Alexandria is a application for managing a local store of scientific papers.
Typically starting with a directory of PDFs, it extracts metadata (title,
authors, year, DOI, journal) from the text of the PDF, consults CrossRef and
OpenAlex, then presents a searchable, filterable card browser.
Alexandria tries to make it easy to find and add related papers.
• Full-text search across title, authors, abstract, DOI and journal
• Citation counts and per-year sparklines from OpenAlex
• Built-in PDF viewer with highlight and comment annotations,
and click-through citation links that jump to the reference
• A viewer sidebar with the paper's table of contents, page
thumbnails and your highlights
• Structured full text (JATS XML) fetched from Europe PMC and
stored beside the PDF
• Authors window: a persistent trail of the authors you follow,
with their works, collaborators, funding and affiliation history
• Journal and topic subscriptions, flagging new papers by
authors you have looked up before
• BibTeX, RIS and CSL export; BibTeX and DOI import
• Preprint detection (arXiv, bioRxiv, chemRxiv and more)
• Duplicate detection by DOI and file hash, with supporting
information recognised as belonging to its parent paper
• An MCP server, so an AI assistant you already use can search
and read your library — no model or API key inside the app
• Sidecar JSON metadata lives next to each PDF - so it's easily
transportable

| Release notes | Release Notes for 0.8.1 o FEATURE: Live BibTeX export. Point Preferences -> Live BibTeX at the .bib file your LaTeX document cites, and Alexandria rewrites it whenever the library changes, so \cite{} works without remembering to export first. The whole file is rewritten rather than appended to, so a correction made in the Edit dialog reaches an entry already written. It is left alone when its contents would not change, so latexmk -pvc does not rebuild in a loop, and it is replaced in one step, so LaTeX never reads half a file. A file you have since edited by hand is not overwritten: it says so, and asks you to choose it again if you meant to replace it. Contributed by Jordan Dialpuri. o FEATURE: Follow arXiv categories. Add... -> arXiv, and tick as many of the 155 categories as you read, grouped by archive. Each keeps its own feed, and a paper cross-listed into two categories appears under both, because that is information rather than a duplicate. Revised versions of papers already announced are left out, which is about half of a typical category. arXiv announces once each weekday, so nothing arrives at a weekend. Rows come complete from the feed - title, authors, abstract, DOI and date - with no further lookups. o BUG-FIX: Clicking an author sometimes did nothing. An optional cache write part way through building the page could fail, and then everything after it - the histogram, the affiliations, the whole profile pane - never ran. It looked like the window failing to open, with the reason visible only in the terminal. o BUG-FIX: A paper with no authors offered a menu button that opened an empty list. The button is left out instead. o BUG-FIX: A PDF's own title is written by whatever laid the page out, and for scans and typeset proofs it is often a production artefact rather than the name of the paper. Watson and Crick (Nature, 1953) asserts "171-4356indd.indd", and 4 of 19 PDFs in a real library carried a typesetter's page marker such as "jm6c00865 1..15"… |
