About BombVault

BombVault is a backup tool you run yourself, on Unraid or anywhere Docker runs. It backs up containers, virtual machines, the flash drive and folders with restic. This app is its companion on your phone: it shows what your servers are doing and opens each one's dashboard. The backups themselves run on your servers, never on the phone.

What you can do
o See every server in your group on one screen, with the newest lines of its activity log
o Open the whole activity log and switch between servers
o Open a server's dashboard in the app, without typing its password once the phone is paired
o Pick the language, light or dark, an accent colour and the corners, or let the app take its look from your first server

To pair, scan the QR code your BombVault shows under Settings -> Pairing, or type its twelve words. Every server in the group appears at once. You can also add a single server by its address.

The activity log reaches the app through a relay: by default the project's relay at parleyport.halleluja.design, or your own ParleyPort if you enter its address on your servers. Requests and answers are end-to-end encrypted with a key that comes from your words, so the relay passes them on without being able to read them. When a server does not answer at its own address, away from home for example, the app opens its dashboard through the relay as well. The app shows no ads, tracks nothing and needs no account.

You need a running BombVault server. BombVault is free and open source under the AGPL-3.0: [link removed]

The app is new and changes quickly, and an update to your server can need an update to the app as well. Please report problems on GitHub.

The app uses the camera only to scan the QR code.

Release info Update on Oct 31, 2026
Release notes BombVault 10.4.0 lets a scheduled backup wait while somebody uses the app, keeps the newest ZFS replica snapshots on the source too, is on F-Droid and sends to Gotify directly. Every storage location can be renamed, and after an own folder moves to another storage location, new backups go there and the storage pages show where everything is. It also ships restic 0.19.1 and rclone 1.75.2 and follows GlimStone 3.8.0.

? Added
o A scheduled backup waits while the app is busy and tries again on its own. A Pre-backup command that exits with code 75 defers it instead of failing it. The When the app is busy card on a container's Settings tab sets how often it is tried again, an optional time window that may run past midnight, and how long it waits at most, then it gives up under Needs you or backs up anyway. The rest of the run goes on, the wait survives a restart, and you get one notice when it waits and one when it ends. A backup you start yourself always runs right away. (#378)
o Ask Plex, Jellyfin or Emby before a scheduled backup. The Activity check asks the media server whether anybody is watching, with Plex's own token from its Preferences.xml or an encrypted API key for Jellyfin and Emby. Paused sessions can stop counting after some minutes, and you choose whether a server that does not answer lets the backup run. BombVault asks the server directly and otherwise through curl or wget inside the container, which also reaches containers on br0 or macvlan. (#378)
o Wait while the container sends data. For apps without such a check, such as game servers or downloaders, a scheduled backup can wait while the container sent more than a rate you set within the last few minutes, read from Docker's own counters. (#378)
o Keep replica snapshots on the source too. The Replica card of a ZFS entry has a field Keep on this server. It sets how many of the newest replica snapshots stay on the source after each replica, next to the ones the target keeps. Their files can be read or...
